Harvard MGB Plastic Surgery Research Day was held in June 2024 – our second annual research day. Christine Rohde from Columbia was our Visiting Professor and keynote speaker.
We hosted 6 of our program alumni as Grand Rounds speakers last academic year – many of whom traveled in-person across the country to lecture.

Colby Hyland, MD, one of our PGY 2 Integrated Residents was awarded the 2024 Best Society Paper Award for his publication “The use of unlisted billing codes for microsurgical breast reconstruction and implications for code consolidation” at the 2024 American Association of Plastic Surgeons Meeting in Boston in May.
Sarah Karinja, MD, one of our outgoing Integrated Chief residents was awarded the Mass General Brigham Resident Teacher Award. She was chosen from among all residents in all disciplines across the entire MGB system for her dedication to teaching her fellow residents.
Ian McCulloch, MD, one of our PGY 5 Integrated Residents was selected as the winner of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons Resident Essay Competition awarded at the ACS Leadership and Advocacy Summit in Washington DC in April.

Yes. I am the newly appointed program director. The program is based out of NUMC staffed by the New York Plastic Surgical Group, a private academic practice with 23 surgeons. There are three new surgeons joining the practice this fall. There is a close affiliation with Stony Brook University. The residents rotate between multiple tertiary care hospitals, community hospitals, and outpatient facilities.

Dr. Catherine L. Ly graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree focused on health disparities. She received her medical degree in her hometown of Honolulu at the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine. She then returned to Yale for her residency training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. In her final year of residency, she served as the academic chief resident. She subsequently completed a clinical fellowship in complex oncologic reconstructive microsurgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Ly has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented at various national meetings. During residency, she was the recipient of a National Institutes of Health T32 surgical oncology research grant and a Plastic Surgery Foundation grant, both of which allowed her to study lymphedema pathophysiology and treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Less than a year from starting, Dr Ly has already developed a robust practice and has expanded the Division’s mission into the West Chester region of New York.
Dr. Jill Schechter is a board certified craniofacial orthodontist who was born and raised in Queens, NY. She began her education at Cornell University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Development. She continued her studies at Stony Brook University, where she simultaneously completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery and Masters in Public Health degrees. She graduated in the top 10% of her dental school class, earning several honors and awards including induction into the prestigious OKU National Dental Honor Society. She continued on to Columbia University where she earned her Master of Science in Orthodontics and served as chief resident. She then completed her Fellowship in Craniofacial Orthodontics at the NYU Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Schechter is certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and maintains professional memberships in the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, Northeastern Society of Orthodontists and the College of Diplomats of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Naikhoba Munabi MD, a former Columbia Medical Student, will join the Columbia faculty after completing her plastic surgery training and craniofacial fellowship at USC and a global surgery fellowship with operation smile. She will join the faculty in September 2024.

Are there any research projects or grants which have been received which you would like to share with the membership?
Our clinical research includes prospective clinical trials in breast reconstruction and vascular anomalies, clinical outcomes research and patient reported outcomes in peripheral nerve, breast, orthoplastics, neuroplastics, craniofacial and limb salvage patients. We also research barriers to access to care both in NY and internationally.
Our bench top research includes wound healing/tissue ischemia, fat biology, bioengineering, peripheral nerve research.
Dr. June Wu received a FY23 Clinical Trial Award - with Planning Phase from the DOD CDMRP (congressionally directed medical research program) to conduct a prospective, randomized, double-blind study to assess propranolol efficacy in postoperativepostoperative chylothorax in congenital cardiac patients, with ?3.4 million over 4.5 years. Prior pre-clinical and clinical studies from Dr. Wu's and her PhD collaborator, Dr. Carrie Shawber's laboratories demonstrated that patients with congenital cardiac anomalies also have intrinsic pulmonary lymphatic anomalies, and that a subset of patients responded to propranolol.

The program continues to have a strong presence at local, regional and national meetings with strong output of both basic science and clinical research projects. For the past year we had 18 presentations at NESPS ’23, 33 at PSTM ‘23, 8 at ASRM ’24, and 12 at AAPS/PSRC.
The program had multiple best papers, best student and top 200 abstracts in PSTM.
Jaime Bernstein won the 2024 Gaspar Anastasi Award - American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Top Resident and Fellow Presentation at the Annual Meeting) in Vancover, capping off a most impressive academic residency which also included winning the best paper at the ASRM in 2021. She also won the Goulian award and Jerome Webster Resident Research Night Award (for the 5th time.)

We have two microsurgery fellows, Angela Volk who completed her Plastic Surgery Residency at NYU and Amy Yao from Montefiore Plastic Surgery Residency.
Our craniofacial fellow is Natalie Plana who completed her Plastic Surgery Residency at University of Pennsylvania.
Our two hand fellows are: Samuel Kim who completed his Plastic Surgery Residency at Yale, and Jennifer Cape, who completed her residency at Western University, London, Ontario.
Have there been any developments/changes within your division/department within the last year?
To match the expansion of both our clinical volume and patient care/operative sites, we have expanded the residency program to five residents per year, which will begin this application cycle.

This year we were fortunate to host a slate of distinguished visiting professors, such as Lawrence Gottlieb, Adeyiza Momoh, Arash Momeni, James Stuzin, Evan Matros, Casio Raposo, Sam Most, and Gerald Brandacher.
For the upcoming year we have a robust visiting professor calendar including planned visits from Dr. Nicholas Haddock, Dr. Frederick Menick, Dr. Sherrell Aston as the Joseph G McCarthy Lecturer, Dr. Edward Chang, Dr. Donald Mackay, Dr. Eric Liao, and Dr. Galen Perdikis.
Are there any research projects or grants which have been received which you would like to share with the membership?
Our clinical research endeavors focus on surgical and patient reported outcomes spanning vascularized composite allotransplantation, hand surgery, breast reconstruction, head and neck reconstruction, and craniofacial surgery. Our robust basic science research focuses on facilitating tolerance in vascularized composite allotransplantation, diabetes and tissue regeneration, and treatment of fibrosis and wound healing.

We graduate four residents a year. This year, we will be expanding our intern class to five residents.

He brings with him his outstanding record of translational science research including an NIH funded study on Retinoic Acid Induced Lymphangiogenesis for Prevention of Post-Surgical Lymphedema. He will improve the quality of our academic endeavors as the Vice Chair of Research for the entire Department of Surgery. He is also a full member of the Center for Immunity and Inflammation. He is the new director for our lymphedema clinic at University Hospital.
