Dr. Arin Greene, Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, was elected to the prestigious position of Vice Chair of the Plastic Surgery Research Council on May 2, 2019 during the 64th Annual Meeting held in Baltimore, Maryland. He will serve as Chair of the society from 2021-2022.

We are in the process of conversion from an Independent Model residency to an Integrated Model residency. We started our first intern in the Integrated model, and filled the 2nd year slot with an internal transfer and the 3rd year slot with an external transfer. We also started our final Independent resident into the first year independent slot, and so now have a total of 6 residents.

Penn State Hershey

Have there been any new additions or faculty changes to your program within the last year?
We have had no new additions or changes to our faculty.

Have there been any developments/changes within your division/department within the last year?
We have had changes within our faculty over the last year beginning with Dr. Donald Mackay taking on the role of interim Chair of the Department of Surgery at Penn State Hershey. With his new position Dr. Mackay turned over the Plastic Surgery Division Chief position to Dr. T. Shane Johnson who has been serving in that position for the last six months. The Plastic Surgery Residency Program Director position was transitioned to Dr. Thomas Samson who had been serving as the Associate Program Director. Finally, Dr. John Ingraham is now serving as the Associate Program Director for the Plastic Surgery Residency program.

Has your program held any events or hosted any speakers over the past year which you would like to share with your colleagues? Are there any coming up in the fall or winter?
We have had several visiting professors over the last year. In May, Dr. Andrea Pusic visited and gave an excellent lecture on Patient-Reported Outcomes in Surgery. Dr. Mark Clemens visited in April and spoke on Breast Implant Associated ALCL. Also in April we had a visit from Dr. Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo from Italy who spoke with us regarding the European experience with BIA-ALCL and his use of Fat Augmented Latissimus Dorsi Flaps for Breast Reconstruction. In March we had the privilege of having Dr. Katherine Au, an alumni of our Integrated Plastic Surgery program, return to Hershey and give the Department of Surgery Alumni Grand Rounds where she gave a talk about her practice entitled "Changing One Childs Life- It Takes a Village".

For the next year thus far, we have Dr. Dennis Orgill coming to visit in March.

Are there any research projects or grants which have been received which you would like to share with the membership?
Dr.'s Thomas Samson, Donald Mackay and Cathy Henry are part of the multi-institution CORNET Cleft Palate Outcomes study. This is an NIH funded outcomes study comprised of 19 centers in the US and Canada looking at fistula and speech outcomes over the next five years. Dr. Rogerio Neves continues his skin oncology research and presently has over $1 million dollars as principal investigator in industry and institutional support for his bench to bedside work. Dr. Dino Ravnic and the Plastic Surgery Research Laboratory was recently awarded a $25,000 grant for miRNA enhanced vasculogenesis for treatment of diabetic microvascular dysfunction.

Dr. Christopher Parham won 1st Place Clinical Science Presentation at the 65th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Robert H. Ivy Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2019.

Dr. Thomas Samson won the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching Recognition Program.

As of 2018, the residency program has expanded to accepting 3 interns each year. As a consequence of Dr. Deepak Narayan's untimely passing in December 2018, Dr. Henry Hsia has taken on the mantle of program director for the residency program.

Are there any research projects or grants which have been received which you would like to share with the membership?
Dr. Henry Hsia was the recipient in 2018 of a National Endowment for Plastic Surgery grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation. He was also co-senior author with collaborator Dr. Valerie Horsley on a publication that appeared in Science in November 2018 entitled, "Myofibroblast proliferation and heterogeneity is supported by macrophages during skin repair".

Dr. Derek M. Steinbacher's latest textbook, Aesthetic Orthognathic Surgery and Rhinoplasty, was published by Wiley in March 2019. With more than 1,000 clinical photos, the book takes a case-by-case look at the analysis, diagnosis, treatment, 3D virtual planning, and adjunctive procedures that influence optimal aesthetic change and functionality to the face.


Medstar Georgetown Department of Plastic Surgery
Name of Program Director: Stephen Baker, MD, DDS

Have there been any new additions or faculty changes to your program within the last year?
We have hired Dr Ken Fan as a new microvascular breast surgeon. Ken was recruited as a resident to Georgetown and successfully completed the Medstar Georgetown Microsurgery fellowship as the first fellow. We have also hired Dr. Rex Hung as a new wound care specialist in the Baltimore region. Dr Hug will work at both Good Samaritan and Franklin Square Hospitals in Baltimore.

Have there been any developments/changes within your division/department within the last year?
The new Georgetown Plastic Surgery clinic will be officially opening in August. We have completely redesigned the physical office to accommodate increased patient volume and faculty recruits.

The Medstar Center for Gender Affirmation offers high quality gender affirming care for the treatment of gender dysphoria. Under the direction of plastic surgeon Dr. Gabriel Del Corral, we have put together a multidisciplinary team that also includes a Urologist, Gynecologist, Colorectal surgeon, and behavioral health specialist.

The Medstar Center for Gender Affirmation is committed to developing and providing surgical and medical services that enhance the overall care of transgender and gender diverse people, while providing them with pertinent knowledge to make informed choices about their transition. We specifically aim to provide high-quality services with compassionate care that acknowledges human rights and ensures respect and confidentiality. The center adheres to WPATH guidelines and is currently involved in clinical research to advance transgender surgical care.

Are there any research projects or grants which have been received which you would like to share with the membership?
We hosted two research fellows this year in the department: Vikas Kotha, from George Washington University School of Medicine, and Cara Black from Georgetown University School of Medicine. Their research focuses on microvascular solutions to lower extremity wound with an emphasis on limb salvage. Supervision for the research fellows is provided by Drs. Evans and Attinger. Dr. Grant Kleiber is studying outcomes after amputation with immediate targeted muscle reinnervation nerve transfers in a highly comorbid patient population, with respect to functional ambulation, return-to-work, and long-term survival implications. He is also examining applications of targeted muscle reinnervation nerve transfers for secondary neuroma excision surgery with respect to pain, function, and neuroma recurrence.

Dr. Ken Fan, focuses on research using ERAS protocols to accelerate recovery from microvascular breast reconstruction. He is also focusing on large database research in the fields of limb and breast reconstruction.

Have there been any new additions or faculty changes to your program within the last year?
Kristen Rezak, MD FACS departed our faculty to join the faculty at Duke University.

Three new faculty members joined us last year. Christie Bialowas, MD FACS, joined after spending the past 5 years as a faculty members at UT-San Antonio she has an interest in extremity reconstruction and targeted muscle reinnervation. Casian Monaco, MD joined us to spearhead the expansion of our breast reconstruction program at Saratoga Hospital. Dr Monaco completed his residency at NYU, and his microsurgery fellowship at UCLA. Joseph Ricci, MD completed his residency at the Harvard combined program, and his microsurgery fellowship at NYU. Dr Ricci has taken over the lead of our clinical research program and has been appointed Associate Residency Program Director.

Have there been any developments/changes within your division/department within the last year?
The division of plastic surgery continues to grow in personnel and in clinical volume. Clinical services have expanded to Saratoga Hospital, and a new freestanding office including an aesthetic center is planned in Saratoga. Further growth is expected over the next few years, and the division is actively recruiting people interested in joining the faculty. Positions include those at Albany Medical Center, the VA hospital and our affiliated community hospitals.

Has your program held any events or hosted any speakers over the past year which you would like to share with your colleagues? Are there any coming up in the fall or winter?
Our faculty have been actively involved in advocacy to forward legislation to mandate insurance coverage for congenital anomalies both at the Federal and NY State levels. Part of this initiative included hosting Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY 20) for an awareness event where he met several patients and families affected by craniofacial disorders.

Dr Patel and Dr Adetayo are Co-Chairs of the New York State Society of Plastic Surgeons 1 in 38 Campaign to Give Kids a Chance. (1in38.org). This is an advocacy and awareness campaign to help further this cause. Plastic surgeons interested in being involved can contact Dr Patel for further information.

  1. We added an ACGME approved international rotation for medical missions focused on cleft lip and palate and ear reconstruction with "Healing the Children", Hernando Moncaleno Perdomo University Hospital in Neiva, Columbia.
  2. We added a new County Hospital rotation at Jacobi Medical Center; while supervised this gives Senior Residents a more autonomous experience.

Our active Visiting Professor Program hosted Drs. Henry Kawamoto, Larry Gottlieb, Jeffrey Kenkel, Akira Yamada, Peter Neligan, and Richard Warren last year and Drs. Rod Rohrich, Ida Fox, Steve Buchman, Gary Rogers, and others this academic year.

Northwell Plastic Surgery gave 43 national presentations and published 19 peer-reviewed papers this past year.

The Division of Plastic Surgery has hired Dr. Patrick Reavey to join the clinical faculty. Dr. Reavey brings with him a tremendous experience in general plastic surgery with a specific focus on hand surgery, upper and lower extremity reconstruction and Microvascular reconstruction of complex upper and lower extremity wounds.

We have formalized a microsurgery training curriculum under the guidance of Dr. Leckenby which has been extremely well-received. This is protected educational time for the residents where they are excused from clinical activity to partake in this 7 week curriculum.

Rutgers New Jersey Medical School

Have there been any new additions or faculty changes to your program within the last year?
This past year has seen significant changes in the Division of Plastic Surgery. Dr Mark Granick who has lead the division for the last 15 years transitioned to Director of the Wound Care Center at University Hospital. Dr. Edward Lee took over the mantle of Division Chief and is helping to integrate the Rutgers Plastic Surgery group into the RWJ Barnabas Hospital System. Dr. Jonathan Keith took over as Residency Program Director. We also recruited another full time faculty member, Dr. Ashley Ignatiuk who specializes in Hand Surgery and Peripheral Nerve.

Have there been any developments/changes within your division/department within the last year?
Dr. Keith has continued development of the Rutgers Center for Transgender Health. The program has expanded to include St. Barnabas Medical Center and coordinates with other hospitals in New Jersey. Our transgender program has become one of the busiest in the nation including all facets of gender affirmation surgery, psychosocial and medical support.

In addition, our residency program was recently approved to expand to 3 residents per year for 6 years, i.e a total complement of 18 residents.

Has your program held any events or hosted any speakers over the past year which you would like to share with your colleagues? Are there any coming up in the fall or winter?
Our program has been lucky to host some fantastic visiting professors in the past year. We have had the honor to host Dr. Dhruv Singhal from BIDMC, Dr. Peter Neligan as the ASRM visiting professor, and Dr. Andrea Pusic from Brigham Health.

Additionally, we partnered with St. Barnabas Medical Center to host a Live Surgery Symposium featuring Dr. Harrison Lee of Beverly Hills, CA and our own, Dr. Jonathan Keith. The focus was on Gender Affirming Surgery with lectures and live facial feminization and chest masculinizing procedures.

Dr. Hari Ayyala (PGY-5) won 2nd Best Paper at the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons Resident’s Night for her work on optimal nipple areola complex placement in transgender chest masculinization.
