By the late 1890s, Johns Hopkins surgeons had already begun recognizing the clinical utility of plastic surgery. In 1897, medical students studying gynecologic surgery under Howard Kelly.one of Hopkins’ founding physicians, were formally exposed to plastic surgery techniques, with coursework emphasizing reconstructive applications.
