Membership Categories
Following are the levels of membership available in the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons:
Active - All Active Members shall be actively engaged in the practice of plastic surgery, and must hold a current appointment on the surgical staff of a hospital in one of the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont. Applicants for Active membership must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery Inc., or in Plastic Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Life - With a written request, Life Membership shall be conferred upon Active Members of the Society who have reached age sixty-five (65) and have been Active Members for at least five (5) years. Such change in membership status shall be effective on December 31 of the calendar year of the member's 65th birthday. Life Membership may also be conferred by the Board of Directors at its discretion upon Active Members who have retired from the active practice of plastic surgery, who have become totally disabled and are unable to practice plastic surgery, or who are no longer practicing in the Northeastern Region and who have been Active Members for at least five (5) years.
Honorary - Honorary Membership may be conferred upon physicians, or other professionals who have achieved eminence in their field, and who have made exceptional contributions to the art, science, or promotion of plastic surgery. There shall be no citizen or residence requirement. Honorary Members do not pay dues and are not eligible to hold office, vote, or serve on Standing Committees of the Society.
Candidate - Candidate Members shall have successfully completed a plastic surgery residency program approved by the Residency Review Committee for Plastic Surgery (or its Canadian equivalent). The Candidate must be in active practice or in a fellowship program located within the Northeastern Region. The Candidate must provide a letter of unrestricted hospital privileges to practice “plastic and reconstructive surgery” from one of the hospitals in which the plastic surgeon practices. If the surgeon is presently within a fellowship program, a letter should be received from the fellowship coordinator stating this. Candidates should provide a copy of an unrestricted medical license from the state in which the hospital letter is received. Candidate Members pay dues, but do not have voting privileges and may not be elected to office or serve on committees.
Associate - Associate Members shall be of high moral, ethical and professional competence, and shall be actively engaged in the practice of plastic and reconstructive surgery or other medical specialty, profession, scientific, or para-medical field which is directly related to plastic and reconstructive surgery. There shall be no citizenship or geographic requirement to become an Associate Member. Certification by the ABPS is not a requirement for Associate Membership. Associate Members do not have voting privileges and may not be elected to office of serve on committees.
Resident Affiliate - Resident Affiliates shall have entered into residency training in one of the approved residency training programs in Plastic Surgery within the Northeast Region of the United States. Any resident who meets the basic requirement may submit an application form and pay the yearly fee.
